Maintaining your Rugier rug
A Rugier rug is hand-tufted in India, in the Bhadohi region, using dense wool selected for its resilience and depth of color.
Like any artisanal textile piece, it lives and evolves.
Regular and appropriate care will preserve its texture, density, and comfort for many years.
Upon receipt
Unpack your rug as soon as possible
Our rugs are shipped rolled to preserve their structure.
We recommend unrolling them upon receipt to avoid any prolonged pressure marks.
Allow it to naturally flatten. Any creases will disappear within a few days.
Routine maintenance
Vacuum gently with:
– a flat or smooth nozzle
– moderate power
– no rotating brush or beater bar
Mechanical brushes can weaken the wool and alter the pile of the velvet.
Recommended frequency
• 1 to 2 times a week in high-traffic areas
• Once a week in low-traffic areas
Fiber loss
A slight loss of fibers may occur during the first few weeks.
This phenomenon is natural for a hand-tufted rug made of dense wool.
It gradually diminishes with use.
Excessive wires
If a tuft of wool protrudes slightly:
– trim it neatly with scissors
– never pull the thread
Pulling could locally weaken the carpet's structure.
Stains
Dry Stains
- Gently remove excess with a non-sharp object (spoon, spatula).
- Vacuum up residue without rubbing.
- Always work from the edge of the stain towards the center.
Liquid Stains
- Immediately absorb with a clean cloth or paper towel.
- Gently blot without rubbing.
- If necessary, use a mild, colorless soap diluted in lukewarm water.
- Avoid over-wetting the rug.
Never use:
– bleach
– harsh chemicals
– alkaline stain removers
These products can alter color and fiber.
For stubborn stains, contact a specialist in cleaning handmade rugs.
Rotation and light
We recommend rotating your rug every 6 months to ensure even wear.
Avoid prolonged and direct exposure to sunlight, which can, over time, alter the natural shades of the wool.
Pressure marks
Heavy furniture can leave temporary indentations.
To reduce them:
– gently brush your hand against the nap of the velvet
– or lightly apply steam from a distance (without direct contact)
Wool fiber has a natural memory that allows the velvet to gradually spring back into place.
Professional cleaning
Professional wet cleaning, with a mild detergent, is recommended:
• every 3 to 4 years for standard household use
• more frequently in high-traffic areas
This cleaning should be performed by a handmade rug specialist.
Why Wool is a Sustainable Material
The wool selected for Rugier carpets:
– is naturally crush-resistant
– absorbs sounds and improves acoustic comfort
– regulates ambient humidity
– traps dust on the surface thanks to its scaly structure
These properties make maintenance simple and long-lasting.
In summary
Regular, gentle, and precise maintenance is enough to preserve your rug for decades.
A Rugier rug is designed to last through time; the care you give it ensures its longevity.
