Hand-tufted rug, hand-knotted rug: what's the difference?

A hand-knotted rug, or hand-tied rug, is made knot by knot on a vertical loom. This is the oldest technique, used for grand Persian, Afghan, or Moroccan rugs. A quality hand-knotted rug can contain several million knots and require many months of work.

Hand-tufted rugs use a different technique: wool tufts are inserted into a canvas using a manual gun, then secured to the back with a latex layer and a cotton backing. The result is a dense, soft-pile rug with excellent durability and a surface that particularly lends itself to precise graphic patterns, sculpted relief effects, and interplay of materials between wool and botanical silk or Tencel.

Vacuum your rug once or twice a week with a smooth nozzle, without a rotary brush. A rotary brush damages the fibers and can deform the relief. In case of a stain, blot without rubbing with a damp cloth. Avoid aggressive chemical products. Professional cleaning is recommended every three to four years.

Avoid exposing your wool rug to direct and prolonged light, which can alter the dyes over time.
